3 Things You Always Wanted to Know About the History of Newport Beach

Here are three things you always wanted to know about the history of Newport Beach.

From Discovery to Present Day, Learn More About This Vibrant, Stunning Community

Nestled along the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, Newport Beach is a bustling beachfront community loved by boaters, beach bums, and adventure seekers alike. Popular with everyone from families with young kids to retirees, it also has a unique and fascinating history. Here are three things you always wanted to know about the history of Newport Beach.

It Was First Explored in the 1500s

Newport Beach has quite the historic past: Native Americans lived in the area for thousands of years, and it was initially explored by Europeans over 500 years ago. In more modern times, Jose Antonio Yorba was one of the early settlers of Spanish California in 1769. He received a large grant from the Spanish Empire in 1801, which is where the cities of Olive, Orange, Villa Park, Santa Ana, Tustin, Costa Mesa, and Newport Beach are located today.

During the Spanish period, the Ranchos began trading goods with U.S. merchants in Boston as well as English and European merchants. During the Mexican period, many immigrants were given parcels of land for converting to Catholicism and setting down roots in the area. Back then, the state of California was selling land at $1 an acre--which would have been an excellent time to get into the real estate game! It got its name, fittingly enough, because it was a new port.

It’s Now Home to the Balboa Peninsula

Constructed in 1906, the Balboa Pier was originally envisioned as a sister project of the Balboa Pavilion, so if you love having some fun in the sun, you’ve come to the right place. Newport Beach is home to an iconic pier as well as the Balboa Fun Zone, a good old-fashioned amusement park with a Ferris wheel, carousel, and other rides. Positioned right over the ocean, it offers stunning coastal views and guarantees plenty of fun for patrons of all ages. Naturally, Newport Beach is also characterized by lovely beaches, from Corona del Mar State Beach (a half-mile sandy beach that is popular with swimmers) to the Wedge (which is beloved by surfers).

It Boasts Some Standout Art Museums

From historic photographs to artifacts, the city’s fascinating history is preserved at the Balboa Island Museum & Historical Society. If modern and contemporary art is more your jam, you can head to the Orange County Museum of Art. You might also want to check out the Irvine Museum or head to Newport Beach City Arts Commission to experience Shakespeare by the Sea for a bit of weekend fun.
