Watchers by Dean Koontz

Dean Koontz is a prolific fiction author who has written more than 20 books during his long career. The majority of his novels are classified as suspense thrillers, although they typically incorporate horror and mystery elements. Many of his books are set in Newport Beach, California.

Watchers is often considered to be his greatest novel. The story follows a top-secret government lab that creates two genetically-altered beings. One is a dog with incredible intellect while the other is a dangerous monster with a tendency to lash out violently. Both beings escape.

Koontz has lived in the area for many years and just recently sold one of his Newport Beach compounds to Undercover Billionaire star Glenn Stearns for $50 million—the most expensive house sale ever recorded in Orange County.

Courtesan by Diane Haeger

Diane Haeger is a long-time Newport Beach resident who has become an internationally-acclaimed author for her many romantic novels. Courtesan is a 1993 book that is still in print today and has been translated into several different languages.

Courtesan is about a scandalous romance during the Court of François I. A recently widowed Diane de Poitiers returns to court and attracts the interest of the king, making her an enemy to another competitor for his affections, Anne d’Heilly.

Anne uses devious tactics to try and alienate Diane, forcing her to seek out an ally in Prince Henri. Henri and Diane fall in love, and their romance becomes gossip fodder for the court. However, their passion persists and goes on to become one of the most legendary romances in France's history.

The Arrangement by Suzanne Forster

Suzanne Forster is another Newport resident and has written over 30 novels during her illustrious career and has been the recipient of multiple awards, including The National Readers’ Choice Award for her mainstream breakout novel, Shameless. If you're an avid fan of romance or Forster, you must check out The Arrangement.

Alison Fairmont Villard wakes up with partial amnesia, failing to recall anything that happened to her before she arrived at the hospital with an unrecognizable face and a husband to boot. After falling off of a yacht, police circled her husband, prepared to charge him with murder. But then Alison turned up against the reef and they were forced to back off.

As Allison begins to regain her memory, she realizes she might be in more trouble than she ever could have imagined.

Gerty the Pig by Louie Lawent

If you need a new book to read to your kids, consider checking out Gerty the Pig, written in 1997 by Newport Beach author Louie Lawent. This book quickly gained popularity and is even among the many children's books available in the Library of Congress.

Lawent’s books have also become part of the accelerated reader programs in schools across the country. The story is a simple one—Gerty the pig wants to make some extra money without doing any real work, and the book follows her misadventures as she tries to make that happen.
