With its close proximity to Hollywood, it’s no surprise that several Newport Beach residents have appeared in cinema. Here are five Newport Beach natives who have hit the silver screen.

Why Women Kill

This dark comedy on CBS All Access stars Newport Beach native Leo Howard alongside actors like Lucy Liu, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Jack Davenport. The show follows the stories of three women living in three different eras and the deaths of their respective husbands. Each couple is connected by living in the same Pasadena mansion decades apart and, unfortunately, the infidelity of their husbands, which leads to their spouses’ untimely demise. Howard plays recurring character Tommy Harte, a servant at the lavish parties held by Lucy Liu’s character Simone Grove. This upcoming actor was born in Newport Beach in 1997, but it didn’t take long for Howard to get his start in Hollywood.

Drake & Josh

Drake Bell got his claim to fame by starring in Nickelodeon’s hit sitcom Drake and Josh, which aired from 2004 to 2007 with four seasons and 56 episodes. Bell’s quippy relationship with his on-screen stepbrother, portrayed by Josh Peck, drives the plot as the brothers navigate their new life as siblings. Born Jared Drake Bell, this Newport Beach native attended Orange County High School of the Arts and has incorporated music into his career by writing and performing the theme song to Drake & Josh, “I Found a Way.”

How to Marry a Millionaire

How to Marry a Millionaire is a 1953 classic starring Lauren Bacall, Marilyn Monroe, and Betty Grable as its three leading ladies. The first CinemaScope comedy, this movie follows three ambitious women courting wealthy gentlemen as they discover the meaning of true love. Although born in Brooklyn, Lauren Bacall along with her beau Humphrey Bogart, another famed actor of the era, spent time enjoying the pristine sands and crystalline waters of Newport Beach. Considered “The Hamptons of Hollywood,” Newport Beach has been attracting brilliant actors for more than half a century.

Adaptation

This 2003 Spike Jonze comedy-drama is a metafilm that considers the difficulties of adapting a screenplay from a piece of prose fiction. Nicolas Cage stars as the lead, Charlie Kaufman, and is supported by Meryl Streep and Chris Cooper. Adaptation won nine awards and has spawned introspection among creators. Cage was born in Long Beach, just north of Newport Beach. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has won numerous awards during his acting career, including two Academy Awards for Best Actor and four Golden Globes.
