From modern marvels to playful pirates, explore three of Newport Beach’s most architecturally interesting buildings
Hugging the coast of Southern California, Newport Beach is known for its boat-dotted harbor as well as the Balboa Fun Zone, an old-fashioned amusement park with rides galore. And while these locales may serve as the face of the city, there are plenty of unique buildings that give it distinct character as well. Here are three of the most original buildings in Newport Beach.
Lovell Beach House
Located on the Balboa Peninsula, the Lovell Beach House was built by modernist architect Rudolf Schlinder in 1926. Today, it’s recognized as one of his most important works, second only to the Schindler House that he built a few years prior for his family as a show house and studio. Made from concrete, the house is lifted above its beachside location by five concrete frames in the shape of figure eights. Inside, the house features a double-height living room, built-in furniture, and ladder-like window designs reminiscent of work by Frank Lloyd Wright. Occasional visits are scheduled for architecture buffs who want to see the striking residence in person.
Pirate House
Ahoy, mateys! If you love pirates, you have to check out the one-of-a-kind Pirate House that can be found while traveling along the canals in Newport Beach. Two boats with pirates in them set the stage for the rest of the house, which shows off everything from an outdoor bar with monkeys all over it to swashbuckling pirates on the terraces. The house, which can be glimpsed from many of the dinner boat tours on the canals, is certain to make visitors feel like they’ve stepped into a Pirates of the Caribbean exhibit. The owner of the house said he put together the display just for fun, and it’s sure to delight kids and kids at heart alike.
Portabello Residence
Taking inspiration from the natural seaside bluffs surrounding the property and architects such as Antoni Gaudi and John Lautner, the Portabello Residence is a modern masterpiece. Characterized by curved features (like the roof, fireplace, countertops, and more), earthy concrete columns, and large windows that let in a plethora of natural light, the house doubles as a piece of art. The 22,000-square-foot house also includes multiple spas and pools, a bowling alley, a movie theatre, and a 12-car automotive museum. It’s no wonder that the Brion Jeannette-designed property was named one of the 10 most expensive homes in North America.
