How to make your home feel better

I’ve Become Woo-Woo: 7 Ways to Make Your Home Feel Lighter

I’ve become woo-woo. Stay with me.

After more than 20 years in real estate, I’ve learned that how a home feels matters. Sometimes I walk into a beautiful house and it still feels heavy. There’s stuff everywhere, little repairs have been put off, and rooms have become holding areas for decisions nobody wants to make.

Life gets busy. Things accumulate. Before you know it, the home you love has become another thing on your to-do list.

I have a friend who sages, and I’ve been following Rayham Destiny on Instagram for his feng shui content. I used to roll my eyes at some of this. Now I’m like… okay. Say more. Following his list helped me take a closer look at my own space, and I wanted to give him credit for inspiring this reset.

What Mel Robbins Says About Physical and Mental Clutter

Mel Robbins also talks about this in her podcast episode, “The 24-Hour Turnaround to Get Your Life Back on Track.” She explains how physical clutter can create mental clutter and recommends starting with one small space for five minutes.

That feels doable. You don’t need an empty weekend or a shopping cart full of matching containers. You can start with the counter you see every morning or the drawer you fight with every night.

Between Mel’s advice and the feng shui content I’ve been following, I started thinking about the little things we live around. The things we mean to fix, the things we don’t use, and the things we keep because we feel bad letting them go.

Here are seven places I’d start.

1. The Broken Things You Keep Putting Off

The drawer that won’t close. The light that flickers. The door that sticks every single time you open it.

You’ve learned to work around them, but they still interrupt your day. Fix what you can, and make a realistic plan for anything that needs professional help. Getting it scheduled can feel better than reminding yourself about it for another six months.

2. The Dead Houseplants

You know the one. It’s not coming back.

If you enjoy plants, keep the ones you can care for. But you don’t need a pot of dried stems sitting in the corner making you feel guilty every time you water everything else.

3. The Clocks That Have Stopped

It’s been 10:42 since February.

Replace the batteries or decide whether you even want the clock anymore. This is a small task, which is exactly why it’s a good place to start.

4. The Chipped Dishes You Never Choose

You reach past that chipped mug every morning to get to the one you actually like.

Sometimes we keep things simply because we’ve always had them. Take a look at what you use and enjoy. You deserve to use your favorite dishes on an ordinary Tuesday.

5. The Junk Drawer

I’m not going to pretend I don’t have one.

Give it five minutes. Throw away the actual trash, put a few things where they belong, and see how much easier the drawer is to use. You can stop when the five minutes are up.

6. The Unfinished Projects

Some projects deserve a spot on your calendar. Others belong to a version of you who had different interests, more time, or a very optimistic weekend planned.

Choose one to finish, or give yourself permission to let it go. Both count as making a decision.

7. The Gifts You Keep Out of Guilt

You can love someone without keeping everything they have ever given you.

If a gift is sitting in a closet because you don’t like it, use it, or have room for it, consider donating it while someone else can still enjoy it.

Enjoy Your Home Before It’s Time to Sell

Working with homeowners across coastal Orange County, I spend a lot of time helping people prepare their homes for sale. We clear counters, handle repairs, edit closets, and make rooms easier to enjoy.

So often, sellers say, “Why didn’t we do this sooner?”

That’s what I want you to think about, even if moving is nowhere on your radar.

Whether you own a home in Newport Beach, rent in Costa Mesa, or live in a one-bedroom apartment, you deserve to feel comfortable and proud of your space today.

I put my heart into helping clients make the most of their homes. Sometimes that means preparing for a successful sale. Sometimes it means encouraging you to finally deal with the things that have been bothering you for years so you can enjoy living there.

Pick three things from this list to tackle this weekend. Start small and notice how your space feels afterward.

If this makes me a little woo-woo, I’m okay with that.
