The story of the Cannery covers nearly 90 years of Newport history. It began in 1921 when the first commercial fish cannery was built along the Rhine channel between 30th Street and Lido Park Drive. The location was, and still is, the hub of commercial fishing boat activity In Newport Beach.

In August of 1966, The Cannery was closed, but not forever. Rebuilt by Bill Hamilton, who was the founder of Clean Harbor Day, opened it back up as a waterfront restaurant in 1973. In the fall of 1999, Mr. Hamilton sold The Cannery to a developer that had planned to tear down the restaurant and put homes on the property.

In the spring of 2000, however, local resident Jack Croul purchased the property seeking to preserve the history of Newport Beach. Mr. Croul entrusted the success of The Cannery to Southern California restaurateur Ron Salisbury. Mr. Salisbury’s family has a long restaurant history that begins in 1923, when they began the first El Cholo Café.

The success since has been remarkable and I can honestly say, this is one of my all-time favorites. The jellyfish light fixtures, the Lido water views, the location and the food are some of the best in Newport.

One thing many local boat owners enjoy is the 180 ’bookable’ feet of dock space.  You can call ahead and book a spot to drive your boat, or your Duffy and park it while you eat at the restaurant. If you don't have a boat, don't worry, you can book their Duffy with a captain and cruise the Harbor catered for the ultimate experience.

The upstairs has a great happy hour from 3:30 to 7 p.m. EVERYDAY, where in their lounge you get 50% off much of their sushi menu. I would be lying if I didn’t admit to going there at least weekly for the past decade.  I love their Hot or Not Margarita and the 911 Sushi Roll is a must.  You can also hit up their bar, The Snug, where there is 50% off wine also every day from 5-7 p.m.

P.S. have you tried the new Louie’s by the Bay? Well, I have and guess who the owner is? I love it almost as much as I love The Cannery!
